Shades of Sound: A Focused and Flexible Approach to Warming Up Your Band

SATURDAY JUNE 13 | 14:30MT

Presented by Nick Novy

Are you the type of director who likes to have complete control over your ensemble’s warm up process? Do you wish there was a focused, but flexible method that provided your ensemble with instrument specific warm ups combined into a full ensemble setting? This session will present various approaches for warm up ideas in the beginning to advanced high school wind ensembles. "Shades of Sounds" is a warm up packet designed to be flexible for your ensemble needs. It contains exercises based upon different musical concepts such as Tone, Time, Balance/Blend, Intonation, Style, and Musicality. Built into the packet are multiple percussion parts to help build a well-rounded percussionist; including a variable snare part with exercises based on the PAS rudiments. Through the flexibility of choice, these exercises feature focused and deliberate concepts to build both instrument specific and ensemble skills. Depending on your ensemble’s current areas of growth, directors can focus on an exercise for the specific concept needed and apply what was learned throughout the rest of the rehearsal. Included in this presentation are recordings of college students on select exercises and custom practice tracks. This packet is still in its beginning stages, so each director will receive a free copy of the score at the end of the session. The presenter would appreciate any constructive feedback you might have.
