The Millennial Music Teacher: What Sets Young Professionals Apart and What You Can Learn From Them
Presented by Holly Kessis
The world of music teaches us to respect, learn from, and appreciate our elders--the great musicians who we have inherited our art from. But to be a successful music teacher, one must constantly strive to learn, to grow, and to change. Young professionals from the millennial generation are at the forefront of this change. Millennials are often pitted against older generations and stereotyped as lazy, entitled, and distracted. But this session will discuss the positive attributes of this generation now that they have become an integral part of the musical workforce. How do they apply their life experiences to their teaching, and how might their teaching styles differ from the styles of older generations? How can they help others understand and adapt their approaches to music learning? This session will examine four key attributes that set millennial music teachers apart: being tech-savvy, experienced with social media marketing, individualistic in their career goals, and experts at integrating their work and personal lives. Participants will gain a new understanding of the mindset of the millennial music teacher, and come to find that teachers of all ages can successfully channel these characteristics to better relate to students of younger generations and progress in their professional lives.
