Racial Justice Repertoire: A Framework for Exploring Music with an Urgent Message

Composer, Alysia Lee will present a framework for planning instruction of choral repertoire with a racial justice theme. Using, the recently published, "Say Her Name," Lee will demonstrate a dialogue session and make connections to the National Core Arts Standards (and Maryland State Fine Arts standards) and the social justice standards.
Participants will explore and analyze a framework for leading choral instruction when social justice themes are presented. Participants will preview creative dialogue prompts and tools that advance 21st century skills, the Artist Habits of Mind, and social justice in the classroom. Participants will differentiate between gestural and structural changes in teaching and learning. Participants will reflect on their own practices.
