Captivating Your Class: Student Achievement through Communication & Metacognition

Student engagement is built on connections and how your class makes them feel. In this session, we will consider ways to make your content delivery more engaging through meaningful communication strategies and identify step by step procedures to increase achievement and engagement through metacognition, peer support, and empowering students to evaluate learning strategies.

We've learned through research regarding English language learners, students will flourish from spending more time speaking, writing, reading, and engaging in the curriculum and less time listening to instruction. So, half of this session is about guiding your students to evaluate their own learning, and the other half is about maximizing your instructional moments.

In this session, attendees will:

  • Define and explore the 7 steps to captivating your class through metacognitive learning strategies.

  • Identify areas to empower student leaders to support others, while building specific moments to revisit learning strategies with struggling students.

  • Develop a library of communication strategies to enhance your vocal image and visual image to improve student engagement.
