Sometimes you need a BHAG (Big, Hairy Audacious Goal!) to get you off the couch and into the practice space.  In this session, Lance will help you identify a BHAG of your very own and plan the steps to taming the beast! Be ready to think, laugh and plan a path forward that is both fun and rewarding!

Cultivating Leadership in Your Band: It Starts with You!

We all know that we learn more than just performance skills in the band room.  We  learn communication skills with our director and peers.  We learn to cooperate towards common goals.  We learn focus and hard work that carries over to other endeavors in our lives.  

One area in which you can grow and help your band simultaneously is in the implementation and empowerment of a student leadership program that partners with your director. Like any of the important lessons we gain in music, developing student leaders takes planning, communication, a clear set of goals, and hard work.  More importantly, it requires you learning the techniques of leadership that you don’t even realize your director is employing with you on a daily basis.  

This session will assist you in setting up a student leadership program in your own school that will not only help to develop leadership skills, but also help your director in smoothing your program’s operation and allowing you to focus more on the music!

Unleashing Your Growth Mindset

In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. But many of us fall into the trap of a fixed mindset, that basic qualities like our intelligence or talents are simply fixed traits. This goes for playing an instrument, playing sports, or doing math.

Have you ever said something like "I can't sing because my voice is terrible"? Or how about "I just can't play high notes"? We all have! These are the words of someone exhibiting a fixed mindset.

Through developing a growth mindset we can learn to love challenges, embrace failure, and seek out opportunities to grow rather than avoiding them.

This clinic will give you the tools to develop and utilize a growth mindset in the practice room, in the rest of school, and in life. A growth mindset will not just make us better at our instruments. It will literally make us happier human beings!
