Designing Learner-Focused Rehearsals

THURSDAY JUNE 11 | 13:30 MT

Presented by Katie Ruzin

The vast majority of ensemble rehearsals are teacher-led with the sole objective of preparing for a performance. However, isn’t this our version of teaching to the test? Music is a vital method for teaching 21st century skills and developing well-rounded individuals. Yet, with our ensembles, we continue to focus primarily on music reproduction. If our goal is to teach our students to be musical rather than to play musically, then we must relinquish some of our control as directors in order to encourage students’ creativity and engage in their own education. In this session, we will challenge your views on rehearsal best practices, confront your skepticism about learner-centered instruction, and explore teaching strategies that you can use immediately.
