Presented by Kat Reinhert

Time: monday june 28, 14:00-15:00 eastern daylight time

This session will provide a brief history of a cappella singing, discuss how a cappella can help decolonize the classroom by giving voice to music that isn’t traditionally found within the choral lexicon, communicate how a cappella can help build and strengthen community within your choral program, and help students gain autonomy in creating their own arrangements of popular music repertoire. This session will also provide ideas and resources for making and rehearsing a cappella arrangements, and discuss student-centered and informal learning environments and how they can be nurtured within the choral classroom. Finally, there will be a brief exploration of how working with technology in both live, virtual and recorded spaces can provide places for further creativity and performance within the context of a choral setting.

In this session, Kat will cover:

1) Understanding of the history of A Cappella

2) How A Cappella can build community in your program

3) Practical techniques for learning and creating A Cappella arrangements

4) Exploring how technology can offer a space for further exploration

5) Provide an opportunity for decolonizing the choral classroom
