Music For All: Reevaluating Assessment and Access in Music

Although many of our systems rely on auditions and pre-requisite knowledge and skills for access and involvement, we often fail to engage larger populations of students in the process of making music in schools. In this session Dr. Hanson discusses strategies for engaging larger populations of students in schools through accessible and diverse music making experiences. Without losing opportunities to celebrate musical achievement, this session explores the wealth of possibilities for inclusive music making grades K-12.

In this session, attendees will:

  • Establish an operant definition of assessment in the music classroom.

  • Facilitate a critical dialog about how various assessments are utilized in participants classrooms.

  • Explore and promote alternative forms of assessment that promote inclusivity in the music classroom.
