Serving Students with Special Needs: What We Need to Know
What are we not being taught and what do we need to know to ensure that ALL students have access to music in schools? Most teacher preparation programs spend little to no time addressing the philosophical and pedagogical needs of students with special needs. In this session Dr. Hanson will discuss the laws, policies, and practices that best support students with special needs when making music in schools.
In this session, attendees will:
Explore resources related to serving diverse student populations.
Explore federal laws and policies that protect and ensure access and education for students with special needs.
Discuss strategies for differentiation, accommodation, and modification in the K-12 music classroom.
Promote the importance of music therapy as a designated service for students with special needs in public schools.
