Using Microphones in a Music Classroom

This session will cover how to incorporate microphones and educate students on using
microphones in a music classroom. Microphones are now the most common instrument on a live stage or in a recording studio. During this session, attendees will learn (1) different types of microphones, (2) when to use which microphone, (3) how to position microphones to pick up the best sound from your vocalist or instrumentalist and (4) how to adjust settings on the mixer to get the best sound out of a microphone. In a music classroom that includes either live performance or studio recording, learning how to use microphones can be extremely beneficial for both students and teachers alike. This session will also include time to allow attendees to ask questions regarding their microphones or their music classroom set-up.

In this session, attendees will:

  • be able to describe the difference between dynamic and condenser microphones.

  • be able to describe the best placements for microphones depending on the sound source.

  • be able to differentiate between when to use a dynamic microphone and a condenser microphone.

  • be able to describe how to adjust gain or trim on a mixing console to get the best sound out of a microphone.
