Key, Not Key—Why Are Words So Confusing? Deciphering Homonyms, Homographs, and Homophones for Improved Student Comprehension
Presented by Nicole Douglas
Key, not key. Note, not note. Piano, not piano. The list goes on. Homonyms, homographs, and homophones are prevalent in the language of music education. What do we do if what students think of when we use a word is not the word we intended? How can we make our teaching clearer to meet the student where they are? More and more students are taking language literally and struggling to interpret instructions. This session will provide lists of frequently-used words that are easily misunderstood, and also discuss ways in which teachers can be more perceptive of students who might be struggling with understanding. All students deserve to feel understood--let's figure out how to better perceive where they are coming from.
