Intersection of Social Justice and Music Education

SATURDAY JUNE 13 | 6:00 MT

Presented by Kevin Johnson

The purpose of this session is to facilitate the conversation around how we, as music educators, implement true social justice within our classrooms and practice. We all understand music education as a function of our careers but what about social justice? What does it mean to view our pedagogy through its scope? How can we change our practices to serve the greater good? What is required of ourselves to implement any focus on social justice in our classrooms with fidelity? This session will ask participants to define themselves, define social justice, acknowledge the impact of current policies in music education, determine an approach and application for social justice being applied within their own practice, work through potential roadblocks, and determine the next steps in their practice.
